Babylonian/Assyrian god of weather, oracles, and divination. Like weather itself, from the human perspective, Adad had a dual nature. He provided the climatic conditions that made agriculture possible; but he was equally the source of devastating events like floods, lightning, and high winds. However, the Mesopotamians viewed Adad primarily as the 'Lord of Abundance', and saw his destructive tendencies as acts of anger against his foes. Adad was known both as the son of Anu (the god of heaven) and of Bel (the lord of all lands and god of the atmosphere.) Symbols of Adad included the cypress and the number six.
