The ability of hardware to tolerate the breakdown of any major components, such as CPUs, hard drives and power supplies. Fault tolerance is typically provided by supplying two or more of the same component, with the additional hardware serving on a standby basis. True fault tolerance provides standby hardware that instantaneously takes over for malfunctioning hardware elements in a completely transparent manner with, ideally, absolutely no loss of data and no processing downtime.
