Opposition leader of Myanmar (formerly called Burma). In her first public speech, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi promised to make sure democracy comes to Burma. While under house arrest in 1991, Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize for her pro-democracy efforts.
In the last years her movements have still been restricted. Suu Kyi is regularly denounced in the government-controlled media, and there is concern for her personal safety.
