A lepton with the same charge as the electron, but with mass 210 times larger, and a lifetime of 2.2 microseconds. Because muons interact only electromagnetically, they are very penetrating. Shielding the detector from spurious muon radiation requires massive shielding. Muons were discovered in cosmic rays by C. F. Powell at Bristol in 1947.
